Available TIP Horses

Red Gate Farm occasionally has TIP-gentled horses available for adoption.  We update this page as often as we can, however, for more frequent updates on their progress, check out our Facebook page.  Although we like to assign a name to horses in training for our own purposes, you are always welcome to choose your own name after adoption!

If you see a horse on our page that picques your interest, we are happy to have you come out and see it for ourself, watch us work with it, and walk you through the adoption process.  If you are approved, we are even happy to work out delivery with you if needed (for a mileage fee), to make the process as easy for you as possible!  For more information on how to adopt, see "Ready to Adopt" section below.

*As a side note, at least for now, we train horses to load into a stock-type trailer, so if you choose to pick them up yourself, you will need a stock-type or slant load with the dividers fully opened.  The floor space should be a minimum of 12' x 6'.  Feel free to contact us with any questions!  We hope to offer other options in the future!

Naomi

ADOPTED!!

Congratulations on your new horse, D.G.!!

  • Age:  5 years
  • Height:  ~14 hands
  • Sex:  Mare
  • Color:  Dk. Bay with small star
  • HMA: Bible Springs, UT
  • Available for adoption:  11/15/20
  • Adoption fee:  $125

The name "Naomi" means "pleasant; sweet," and that is the absolute definition of this mare! Her first evening at the farm, she was eating out of our hand.  It took about 90 minutes of working with her to get to the point we could pet her all over her head, neck, and torso, halter and lead her gently, and even pick up her front feet!  Within a week, she was picking up all 4 feet (though we are still improving her hind feet pick-up), allowing us to saddle and even ride her, and loading into our trailer. She seems to just relish attention.

With her gentle, calm demeanor, this sweet horse would likely suit a beginner adopter very well.  Even our 9 year old daughter can walk right up, pet her, and groom her, after just a few days on the farm.

Pheobe

ADOPTED!!

Congratulations on your new horse, T.A.!!

  • Age:  10 years
  • Height: ~14 hands
  • Sex:  Mare
  • Color:  Black with large star
  • HMA: Silver King, NV
  • Available for adoption: Contact us if interested!
  • Adoption fee:  $125

The name Pheobe was chosen for this mare, because it means "bright; pure," which we felt was fitting based on her gorgeous, bright star, and her pure, untainted past in the wild.  This mare has proven very smart, full of try, and a quick learner.  As a 10 year old, she has a lot of fear of humans to overcome, but she also has shown that she is very willing to try to trust, and to attempt the things we ask of her.  For this reason, she is now progressing very quickly in her training.

She has all her TIP criteria met.  She halters and leads, stands to be groomed, yields to pressure, backs when asked, lunges very calmly, stands tied, crosses obstacles, picks up her feet, and loads into a trailer. Pheobe is stocky for a mustang, with thicker bone, and has incredible movement, suggesting she will be very versatile for the adopters choice of riding or driving disciplines.

One side note on this mare is that she also has a hip brand, with a strong possibility that she was part of the fertility control program before being placed for adoption.

We believe this mare is well on her way to living a successful domestic life as someone's new partner. However, because she was wild for nearly 10 years, she can be reactive when pushed too hard, and it will take her a while to really bond and trust humans.  We feel it would be best that she go to a home with training experience, or someone who has a good trainer/mentor to help them continue her progress.

Ready to Adopt?

If you are interested in adopting a TIP mustang from Red Gate Farm, here's what you need to do:

  1. Ensure your facilities meet BLM requirements, which you can find HERE.
  2. Contact us to let us know you are interested.  We like to talk to potential adopters, to help ensure the horse is a good fit for your needs and available for adoption.
  3. Submit your APPLICATION to your local BLM office. If you are planning to get a gentled horse from a TIP trainer, you will need to make a note of that on your application to qualify for the 5' fencing requirement (if applicable).  Ungentled horses MUST have minimum 6 foot fences!
  4. Once your application is approved, if the horse is ready to be released from our training program, you will send the final paperwork and horse information (which we provide), and a check for $125 to the BLM.
  5. Once you, receive word that your information is accepted, you contact us to schedule pickup or delivery of your horse within 3 days.  Unless other arrangements are made, you will pay an additional boarding fee after the 3 day period.
  6. CONGRATULATIONS! You are now the proud owner of a true Living Legend!!  If the horse is under Sale Authority, you will receive a Bill of Sale from the BLM.  If it is under the adoption program, you will receive title after one year.

For more information, please see the BLM adoption page or the MHF TIP adoption page.

*Please note, Red Gate Farm has no control over the processing of applications, and cannot hold a particular animal for you.  As a general rule, the BLM processes applications on a first come, first served basis, and typically you will receive a response within 1-2 business days if you apply electronically.
