Red GAte Farm, LLC is now Accepting Horses for Training!

In September of 2023, the BLM suspended its contract with Mustang Heritage Foundation, effectively ending the very popular TIP program. This program was a big focus here at Red Gate Farm, LLC, as one of our passions is getting wild mustangs out of holding and into loving, adoptive homes. Due to the program no longer being an option, we have decided to accept horses for training--both wild and domestic. This new offering will allow new adopters to continue adopting wild mustangs from events and holding facilities, and we can help gentle and train them for you!

We like to keep our services and pricing system simple and fair to all involved. We base it on the fact that the first 2 weeks working a new horse is always the most challenging, because that is when we are taking the most risk (for wild mustangs), and any horse is experiencing a steep learning curve. Our prices reflect that, and training fees are reduced after those first 2 weeks. In addition, we also understand that not everyone has an unlimited training budget, or perhaps you just need a little help getting over a "hump" (ie taking a mustang from "wild" to "gentled"), or working on some ground manners and improving a foundation on a domestic horse. Either way, to help you reach your goals for your horse, we have decided to offer a 2-week and a 4-week option. The horse benefits, you benefit, and your pocketbook still has cash left at the end!

Training Services:

Full Board (we only board in conjuction with training at this time): Includes 12x12 outdoor stall, with attached 14x38' run. This setup is safely designed and constructed with everything from minis to wild mustangs to draft horses in mind. Board includes fresh, free choice water, a diet of mixed-grass hay, free choice salt, daily California Trace mineral, and supplemental feed as needed for weight (common for mustangs or young horses). We treat your horse like it was one of our own, with checks several times daily, regular turn out/free time in our round pen (we also hope to offer pasture and an arena in the near future), deworming (ivermectin), and daily stall cleaning. We also include basic hoof trims as needed (will be discussed with owner).

Additionally, as a service to adopters of wild mustangs, we include picking up your horse from the Ewing, IL holding facility. Consider this our gift to help the mustangs!

2-week Gentling/Training: $550
This option is based on the TIP program, and is designed for adopters of a wild mustang. It involves all the most basic concepts any horse needs to help develop a solid foundation. Don't have a wild mustang? No problem! This option is excellent for "filling holes" in domestic horses that may have become a bit pushy or dispresctful. Price includes Full Board. Training includes:
  • Touching, Haltering, and Leading
  • Stand for Grooming
  • Standing tied for short periods
  • Picking up all 4 feet
  • Lunging
  • Accepting touch all over the body
  • Yielding all 4 Quarters
  • Backing
  • Flexing the Head
  • Sending Cues
  • Loading and unloading in a trailer, via ramp and step-up
  • Desensitizing to various stimuli
  • and MORE!

4-week Training: $1000

This option is designed for owners who want a bit more of a foundation on their horses, and allows the horse more time to turn good behaviors into good habits. In addition to learning the skills from the 2-week program, training includes:

  • Introduction to saddle and bridle
  • Flexing to bridle from the ground
  • Improves on directional transitions and response to cues
  • Intro to weight in the saddle
  • Cavalleti, obstacles, small jumps, and advanced desensitizing
  • Maintaining gait and improving balance

In some cases, we may be able to progress to riding, HOWEVER, we do not guarantee this in our 4-week program. Wild horses in particular may not be physically or mentally ready for a rider, so this is an option that we can discuss with owners on an individual basis, but may require more time. We will NOT rush a horse that isn't a ready.

If you have a domestic horse that is just needing a tune-up or some foundation work, we do offer the ability to customize training goals slightly with this option. Customized additional options MAY include:

  • Ground driving
  • Harnessing
  • Advanced obstacles
  • Trail Riding Skills
  • Hitched driving
  • Tricks
  • Liberty
  • Have another idea? Let's talk!

Transport Services:

We offer transport services for pick-up and delivery of horses, including wild mustangs. We have a BLM-approved trailer, that is customized to allow a variety of configurations. While we donate PICKUP of wild mustangs from the Ewing, IL facility, transport of the other horses to/from the farm, or of gentled horses after training is completed is the owners responsibility.

General Transport: $2 per horse per loaded mile

We do offer a discounted rate for multiple horses. We can also travel to any state within a day's drive of southern IL, and are happy to work with adopters needing mustangs transported to/from other trainers or facilities. If further than that, additional costs may be involved.
